Book review: Murder mystery a deconstructed Agatha Christie

Lucy Foley

The Guest List

HarperCollins Canada

Looking for a fun summer read that’s entertaining and fast? Look no further than Lucy Foley’s new novel The Guest List.

It’s a murder mystery that will remind you of a deconstructed Agatha Christie mystery – a tale well told that will keep readers guessing until the end. It’s told in turns by various characters, with very, very short chapters that give readers just enough information to keep them interested and flipping the pages.

There is Aoife the Wedding Planner, Hannah the Plus One, Jules the Bride, Johnno the Best Man, Olivia the Bridesmaid and Jules’ sister, who may or may not be mentally unstable, Charlie the best friend of the bride, who was terrorized by the Groom’s private school friends at the stag party and Will the Groom.

Like the rest of us, they all have secrets, some more dramatic than others. Foley masterfully reveals those secrets and the sequence of events, keeping the pacing quick and lively. It all takes place at Will and Jules’ remote wedding on a small island off the coast of Ireland. Will is good looking – a TV star made famous in a reality show where he gets stranded in ridiculously dangerous places and has to find his way home. Jules is the editor of an up-and-coming magazine, successful in her own right. They spare no expense on the wedding, even though Jules’ dad may be in some financial trouble and is now on his third family.

Foley, who is Irish herself, wrote The Hunting Party and three other novels. She’s written a perfect summer read for mystery lovers and others.
