Book review: The Things We Cannot Say may break your heart, in the very best way

The Things We Cannot Say

By Kelly Rimmer

Graydon House Books

Wow. This is an extremely accomplished book and I highly recommend it. Dual story lines take readers to both Poland during the Second World War and modern day America. The Poland story line is tragic and includes the Holocaust, the separation of families, heroism and hardship.

The modern day storyline includes hope, a theme exploring chidren with autism and the conflicted life of a stay-at-home mom who is ambitious to make a difference in the world.

Both storylines are full of tension between doing what is right and doing what one wants to do; two competing ideas that never quite mesh together.

The Things We Cannot Say is also a mystery story, but it’s not about murder, it’s about family histories and the secrets that are sometimes too hard to reveal. The mystery unfolds in a masterful way and keeps readers guessing right up to the very end.

As soon as I finished this novel, I searched for more books by Australian author Kelly Rimmer. Unfortunately, I have already read most of them. The ones I haven’t, I immediately reserved at the library. This book is that good. Rimmer is a worldwide bestselling author, including the New York Times, and rightly so.

I should also mention that The Things We Cannot Say is a love story of the highest order. It’s a love story that demands sacrifice in the name of the beloved, on the parts of both members of the partnership.

Prepare for heartbreak of the very best kind, but also hope and optimism for a better future.
